HOW TO PLAY LIVE BACCARAT

Baccarat, like Live Blackjack, is one of the simplest casino games to play, although you need to remember the intricacies of the banker’s third card rules (more below). When you are seated at a live dealer table, you bet on either the player, the banker or the tie position.

Most people bet on either the player or the banker so we will start with them. When bets are placed, each position is dealt two cards. The hand with the value closest to nine wins. In the case of a tie, no deciding card is drawn.

The scoring is simple. All cards 2-9 are worth their face value, while 10, jack, queen, and king are worth zero. An ace is worth one.

No hand can be worth more than nine. If you are dealt two cards that add up to more than 9, you simply drop the first digit, so you are left with a single number. For example, 9 + 7 = 16. The value becomes 6.

Now we understand the aim and the scoring, let’s look at the only rules you’ll need to remember.

• If the player or the banker is dealt a total of 8 or 9, both positions stand (no more cards are dealt)
• If the player’s total is five or less, the position is dealt another card, unless banker has 8 or 9
• The banker takes another card if their total is five or less

If the player is dealt a third card, then the banker position acts as follows:

• If the banker total is 2 or less, it draws a card
• If the banker total is 3, it draws a third card unless the player's third card was an 8.
• If the banker total is 4, it draws a third card if the player's third card was 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
• If the banker total is 5, it draws a third card if the player's third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7.
• If the banker total is 6, then it draws a third card if the player's third card was a 6 or 7.
• If the banker total is 7, the banker stands.

While the banker third card rules can take a while to remember, keep in mind when you play, you don’t really need to keep track as the dealer will do it all automatically.

WHAT ARE LIVE BACCARAT ODDS AND PAYOUTS?

A winning bet on the banker hand pays 95% of your wager, with the 5% deducted referred to as commission.

A winning bet on the player hand pays even money. And the draw pays 8/1, although some live baccarat games will pay 9/1.

Live baccarat has some of the lowest house edges of any casino game. The edge in favor of the casino is just 1.06% on the banker bet, and 1.24% on the player bet.

Betting on the tie is much more profitable if it comes in, but the house edge is 9.5% on 8/1 payouts and even bigger on 9/1 payouts.

Baccarat is a game of luck. There is no skill involved and like all casino games, past results should never be used as an indicator of future results!

In terms of strategy, betting on the banker position offers you marginally better long-term value than betting on the player position.
